Go-Ahead for New Danube Ferry Line
|
Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg will launch Saturday the construction works of a new Danube ferry facility in the town of Nikopol on the Bulgarian bank to connect it to Romanian city Turnu Magurele on the other side.
The first sod of the new ferry line will be dug up Regional Minister Tserovski at a ceremony to be attended by Dimitris Kourkoulas, head of the European Commission Delegation to Sofia, Romania's Transport Minister Gheorghe Dobre and Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Activities Cheorghe Seculici.
The abortive plan to establish the junction at that site has a 10-year history. The project got the green light in 2003 by the European Union and the pre-accession PHARE-Transborder Cooperation program will allocate EUR 3.8 M. Co-financing from the national budget comes to EUR 1.2 M, bringing the aggregate financial aid to EUR 5.3 M.
The new ferry line will shorten the trip to Europe by 100 kilometers.
The ferry is projected start operations in July 2006.
